Maria (Ola) Kopacz is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication Studies. Her research interests focus on the potential of new media (especially social networks) to spread ideas and empower people in contexts like education, news, and entertainment. She teaches courses in communication research and mass media.

Her current projects include a study of YouTube portrayals of Native Americans and the use of social media to market upstart businesses.
Dr. Kopacz's articles have appeared in the Journal of Broadcasting and Electronic Media, New Media & Society, Electronic Journal of Communication, Human Communication Research, and Communication Teacher. She has taught courses in media effects, communication research, communication theory, and public speaking.

She holds a Ph.D. in Communication from the University of Arizona and an M.A. in Applied Linguistics from Warsaw University in Poland. Dr. Kopacz is the faculty advisor to the WCU chapter of Lambda Pi Eta.

During Spring 2012, Dr. Kopacz is working from Białystok, Poland, where she is developing international relationships and teaching online courses for WCU.
